MARS LAB YOUTUBE STARS?

The Mars Lab YouTube Video Competition is your chance to show off your creativity and movie-making skills. There’s lots of sensational prizes and the best videos will star on Mars Lab’s official YouTube channel for the world to see!

TO ENTER:

  1. Form a team of up to 3 classmates from your school
  2. DOWNLOAD THE REGISTRATION KIT and register your team
  3. Make a dynamic and exciting video about the search for life on Mars
  4. Use Dropbox to upload your completed video by 31 August 2014 - EXTENDED!
  5. Winners will be announced on 12 September during the 2014 Ultimo Science Festival.

FIRST PRIZE:
The producers of the winning video as judged by our panel will win a top brand action cam FOR EACH STUDENT from the winning team AND ANOTHER FOR YOUR SCHOOL!
Total value: over $1500!
SECOND PRIZE:
The producers of the runner-up video as judged by our panel, will win a $100 tech store voucher for each student from the team.
PEOPLE’S CHOICE PRIZE:
The video that receives the most likes on YouTube during the judging period will win a $50 tech store voucher for each student in the team.

HOW IT WORKS:

The competition
Harnessing a combination of creativity, storytelling, entertainment and video production, high school student teams make a dynamic and exciting video of up to a maximum of 3 minutes in length video about the search for life on Mars. Videos can include fictional and/or factual content.

To register
In order to submit a video entry, teams must first complete the Registration and Video Entry/Model Release Form and return it to the Mars Lab.
Each student in the team must be included on the form. Any students under 18 must obtain their parent/guardian’s signature.

To submit video entries
Teams submit their produced video to the Mars Lab by Sunday 31 August, 2014.

  • The Mars Lab judging panel will judge all submitted videos and choose the finalists.
  • Produced videos must be submitted via Dropbox (www.dropbox.com).
  • The Dropbox file must be shared with the Mars Lab via email: [email protected].
  • Dropbox file names must include the title of the video and the team name.
  • Video submissions must also include completed Video Entry/Model Release Forms.

The judging criteria
Videos will be judged on the following criteria:

  • creativity (style and look)
  • educational content
  • entertainment value
  • technical production quality.

Judges’ decision is final.

The finalists
The finalist video entries will be announced on themarslab.org (this site) on 2 September 2014. Finalists will also be contacted via email.
The finalist video entries will be featured on the Mars Lab’s YouTube channel and screened at the Powerhouse Museum, as part of Ultimo Science Festival 2014, from 3-12 September 2014.

The prizes
First prize: each student in the winning team will be awarded one (1) top-brand action camera. The school for the winning team will also receive a top-brand action camera. A maximum of 4 cameras will be awarded.
Runner up prize: A $100 popular tech store voucher for each student in the team.
People’s Choice: The video that receives the most likes on YouTube during the judging period will win a $50 tech store voucher for each student in the team.

Conditions of entry

  • Teams must be comprised of three (3) students from the same school (students can be across year groups)
  • Australian schools only
  • All students must be in stages 4, 5 or 6
  • All students must have completed the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences Release Agreement for Audiovisual Recording (on page 4).
  • The video must be no longer than three (3) minutes in length.
  • Teams should register before submitting a video.
  • Video submissions must be received no later than 11:59PM on Sunday 31 August 2014 EST
  • Videos must be entirely your own work — no copyright or infringing material
  • Videos must not include prominent use of commercial logos
  • Videos must make use of appropriate language
  • Videos must be previously unpublished — they cannot have been published on YouTube or any other website.
